An Exercise in Simplicity Socks

 

Materials:

Set of 5 US size 5 dpns

Cable needle or I like to use an extra yarn needle

Single ply worsted weight blue yarn

Cast on 49 sts, begin pattern repeat (7 repeats around sock). Repeat pattern down 15 times and begin heel.  Knit in pattern 25 sts on the heel flap for 23 rows. When knitting the heel flap remember that there will be a wrong side and a right side and all the sts will be reversed on the wrong side. Turn the heel. Knit 14 sts k2tog, k1, turn. Slip 1, p 3, p2tog, p 1, turn. Slip 1, k4, k2tog, k 1, turn. Slip 1, p5, p2tog, p 1, turn. Continue in this way until all the sts are worked and the yarn

Slip 2 sts hold to back, Knit 2 sts, Knit 2 slipped sts on R side, Sl 2 sts hold to front, k 2 sts, k 2 Sl sts on W side

Knit through back loop on R side, Purl tbl on W side

is on the knit side.  Pick up 8 sts from both sides of the heel flap and divide up the heel sts so they are even with the heel flap sts. Begin Instep: the first needle will start from the heel knit to the last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. The second and third needles can stay in pattern. On the fourth needle at the first 3 sts, k1, slip, slip, k2tog, then knit to end.  Repeat the two decreases every other row 4 times total. Repeat the cable pattern 12 times plus two more rows then begin toe. Toe: decrease 1 st at the beginning of each needle, every other row, until each needle has 10 sts on it. Then decrease 1 st every needle, at every row, until 1 st per needle is left. Break yarn and thread through 4 sts. Weave in all ends.
